By now, Amazon has made its mark on the grocery shopping world by acquiring grocery delivery startup Grocery Warehouse.
And in 2018, Amazon will introduce a new grocery-tracking app called Amazon Alexa, which will work with Amazon’s existing Echo line of smart speakers.
The Amazon Echo is a speaker designed to play music through Alexa, and is currently available for preorder for $399.
The Amazon Echo will also include a few new features.
One of those new features will be an intelligent grocery assistant, which can tell you what you need to know about what you’re buying by reading through your shopping history.
If Alexa is smart enough to figure out what you ordered and give you directions to the closest store, that’s good news.
Alexa will also be able to suggest and recommend items based on what you’ve read in the news.
This is the sort of smart shopping that Amazon and Amazon Echo have been trying to get into the living room for years, and it will likely be the driving force behind Alexa’s arrival at some grocery stores in the near future.
It’s going to take a while to get there though.
Amazon’s Alexa will be able play back video content from various streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Amazon’s own InstaCast, but it won’t be able directly stream video content like you would with Google Assistant.
Instead, Amazon’s Alexa is going to play back YouTube videos, which could be a useful addition if you have access to a streaming box.
The Alexa app will also integrate with Amazon Video and Amazon Prime, so you’ll be able use Alexa to order groceries, check on a grocery list, and more.
Amazon’s Echo, which is expected to debut in 2018 and be sold in more than 50 countries, will have Alexa functionality built into its smart speaker, but the Echo won’t have a built-in smart camera.
As for Alexa’s smart speaker hardware, Amazon is expected not to include a dedicated smart camera with the Echo, so it’s possible that Amazon could be shipping its Echo speakers with a camera as an option.
But there’s a chance that the Echo speaker could also have a camera built in, too.
